Mates in Mind

Hello, my name is Ryan.

Counselling is a deeply personal process and with that in mind I understand that finding a counsellor that's right for you is extremely important, it also can be a daunting process to take your first steps into. So first off, thank you for visiting my site, I appreciate the courage it can take to get this far.

I am a fully qualified counsellor based in the Nottinghamshire area. I offer accessible online support via video messaging and email. In order to help and support you I aim to focus on you and give you the space to feel secure, held and genuinely heard by offering you the time to explore any thoughts or feelings that might be troubling you. I aim to listen without judgement and work with you and your needs by offering a space for you to explore any concerns in confidence.

How I work

I am trained in person-centred and solution-focused counselling, what that means is that i'll work with you to create a space where you can establish your goals and work on solutions. My work is relational, I focus on the here-and-now and on moving forward. I won't tell you what to do as I believe in the power of the individual and in promoting your own strengths and autonomy. I have experience of working with various mental and emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship breakdown and abuse. I have training in working with grief and loss, trauma, sex and sexuality and addictions. I have a special interest in working with social anxiety disorder, health anxiety and work related stress.

We all feel the effects of anxiety at some point in our lives, be it when we are attending an interview, or sitting an exam. It is a normal function of our body as it prepares to perform some action, and generally it passes soon after the activity begins. Unfortunately some people experience anxiety more intensely, sometimes continuously throughout the day. The effects of which can be drastic and extremely deliberating.

If you are experiencing:

- Intense fear that is continual even when at home, without anything to cause the fear being present.
- Expecting the worst out of situations.
- Paranoia.
- You find yourself looking for the smallest signs of problems.
- Dwelling on the past and worrying about the future but not focusing on the here-and-now.
- Feeling exhausted and drained of energy.
- Avoiding everyday activities like meeting friends, or going out.
- Generally feeling overwhelmed.

Any one of these problems can be enough to unsettle a person and cause distress, extreme anxiety disorders usually present with a number of these symptoms however. If you feel that you might be experiencing some of these problems, or anything else then I can help you try to gain some insight into why this might be happening.

How can counselling help you:

Talking is helpful. Being able to give voice to the things that go around our heads can bring clarity and insight in the place of confusion and lack of understanding. Being genuinely heard and understood by another person, feeling accepted, and being able to be our true selves without judgement can lead to a sense of freedom and empowerment. Being in a therapeutic relationship can help us to work on issues that prevent us being the best version of ourselves, so we can more easily reach our potential, embrace change and grow.
