Mates in Mind

Hello and welcome my name is Garon Sheppard a Carterton-based Counsellor.

Taking that first step should never be considered a moment of weakness - instead, it shows the true strength of character.

The first step of the process is taking the first courageous step to seek therapy.
Taking this first step can be empowering and may feel a bit scary at the same time, but the best results are achieved by talking it out, with the assurance of knowing that you will not be judged, but met with empathy and understanding.

Whether you are experiencing indefinable feelings of dissatisfaction or seeing to focus on a specific issue, I can provide a safe and confidential setting in which thoughts and feelings can be discussed – free from judgement and prejudice.
Experiences and problems that we face can create feelings of unhappiness such as stress, low mood and a loss of control or direction in our lives. It can also be difficult to truly share our thoughts and feelings with our friends and family.

I offer online sessions via Skype and walk-talk therapy in and around West Oxfordshire which offers opportunities to experience compassion, acceptance and healing.
Walk-talk therapy offers therapy and walking in nature instead of being in the therapy room's 4 walls. I run these sessions in local areas at your own pace.
Working in this way can be effective and connected.
I am an experienced therapist with over a decade of working background in addictions, homelessness, supported living, autism and mental health and able to adapt to meet your needs.
I can offer you a confidential place to explore issues and feelings without any pressure or judgement.
Doing so can help reduce confusion and encourage proactive change and to help you move forward.
I work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed period, to enable you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

As an integrative Counsellor, I draw on elements of different perspectives and provide a unique therapy that can be adapted to suit a client's needs.
I use the insights and techniques of Humanistic Counselling, Psychodynamic Therapy and Rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT)as well as DBT Mindfulness techniques as and when required.
To help gain a deeper understanding of your concerns and work towards a new and happier sense of self.

I can also offer a range of access opportunities for counselling Including over the telephone, online and walk-talk therapy.
Helping you reflect and develop ways to move forward, tailoring each session to meet your individual needs.
I will support you in finding solutions or finding a change in your life where required...
I will accept and respect you for who you are which will help you to feel more confident and improve your self-worth.
My approach is to treat each person as an individual. Everyone is treated with respect and discretion

I am passionate about creating a safe and non-judgemental and confidential space in which you feel comfortable exploring the issues and concerns you are facing at present.
Everyone is an expert in their own life and it’s my job to help you to make the changes that are important to you.
I can offer confidential supportive counselling for a range of issues including bereavement, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, addiction, relationship difficulties, trauma and abuse.
I offer short/fixed-term counselling as well as long-term counselling.

Whatever the counselling approach or combination of approaches turns out to be best for you, you can be sure that the counselling you receive will be professional but warm. You’ll get the help you need. Counselling can sometimes be challenging, but you will always be fully supported and never judged or made to feel small.

In our first session, I can usually provide you with an awareness of how counselling may be able to help you. It’s also sometimes possible to indicate how long I feel we may need to work together – though of course this depends completely on what you want from therapy and may change as the work progresses. You will never feel rushed or pushed out of your depth; we go at the pace which is right for you.
So that counselling sessions stay on a professional footing and support you best, counselling has strong boundaries.
I won’t impose my beliefs or opinions on you. What you say in a counselling session will be kept confidential.

Theoretical approach, warmth and genuineness, along with the clear boundaries, work together to ensure that you feel heard, understood, cared for, able to be open and to be yourself. Then through the counselling process, you can freely explore, heal and grow.

I am a Registered and Accredited Member of the NCPS (National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society) and am bound by their Ethical Framework for good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and subject to their Professional Conduct Procedure.
I also meet NCPS's requirements for supervision of my work with clients and undertake Continuing Professional Development.

I am also an Anxiety UK Approved Therapist providing therapeutic support to the charity’s members and partner beneficiaries. I am subject to Anxiety UK’s regular monitoring of my professional qualifications, supervision, continual professional development, insurance and professional body membership in addition to complying with the ethical framework and professional standards set down by my registered governing body.
