What Can I Expect From Counselling?

There are many different reasons why people decide to seek counselling – it offers a chance to talk to someone you can trust about sometimes difficult issues. Counselling gives you the chance to talk about yourself and your life in a safe and confidential environment.

By choosing a National Counselling Society member you can be assured that you will be meeting someone who has been properly trained and assessed by the Society to be a safe and ethical practitioner. How do I find a counsellor?

Within the profession you will find that people use a number of different titles such as counsellor, psychotherapist, psychotherapeutic counsellor, etc. we have given a brief explanation of these below.

There are a variety of places where you can find a counsellor:

  • In the work place
  • In places of education
  • Some charities and voluntary organisations

What sort of issues can counselling help?

Counselling can help with all sorts of different issues. It can help with positive events such as choosing a direction in life or reaching your full potential. Perhaps you are feeling a ‘bit stuck’ and would value the perspective of a counsellor. There may be things from your past that you would like to address or there may be things in the present that you want to try and change. Perhaps you are experiencing significant events in your life such as getting married and starting a family, leaving home for the first time or coming to terms with the death of a loved one.
